Calendar History

If you are looking for promotional calendars, click here.

For the history of the calendar and how it evolved, please read on.

In its most basic form, a calendar is nothing more than a system or way to organise days to keep track of time. Calendars are divided into years, with one calendar usually representing 1 year. From there the calendar is usually divided into months, weeks and days. The date usually refers to a specific day within a calendar.

Calendars used in most of the modern western world are based on the Gregorian Calendar and is divided into 12 months of varying durations.  It is called the Gregorian Calendar as it is named after Pope Gregory XIII and is also referred to as the Western Calendar or the Christian Calendar. The Gregorian Calendar as used today was introduced in 1852 and was a refinement of earlier calendars, the most recent being the Julian Calendar.

Examples of other not so common calendars are:

  • Lunar Calendar
  • Islamic Calendar
  • Hebrew Calendar
  • Solar Calendar
  • Hindu
  • Financial Year Calendar

While the term calendar can refer to a system of measuring long periods of time, it can also refer to a product designed to record and display the actual months and days within a particular year. A physical calendar hanging on a wall or displayed on a desk, helps the owner keep track of not only the day and date, but events that may be important to them.

Wall and desk calendars have become a popular method of advertising for many businesses and promotional calendars have become an industry themselves. Since the 1800’s, businesses have produced calendars containing images that customers would find pleasing, that they would be happy to hang on their wall. The fact that this calendar was also an advertisement for the business means that not only was the calendar treated as a gift, but it also promoted the business for the next 12 months.

Promotional calendars can be the brochures that keep advertising your business for a year and build trust and familiarity with your business. Your business will be top of mind when they are ready to buy your product or service.

Of course you should not confuse a calendar with a calender or colander. Just for your information a calender is a large metal roller or set of rollers designed to flatten various materials such as paper or plastics. The word calender has no relationship at all with calendar, having originated from the Greek word for cylinder. It is remarkable how many times people will type in calender instead of calendar, judging by our website statistics. Perhaps there is an opening for promotional calenders as well. A colander is a kitchen implement for draining food, usually in the shape of a bowl.
